ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

Governor de Jongh is challenging students from across the territory were challenged to read more this summer  through his Read 5!, Summer Reading Challenge. The program which began during the summer of 2009, officially kicked-off its second year on June 4, 2010.

Students that successfully completed reading the five books and turn in the tracking sheets will receive a certificate of completion and have their name printed in the local newspapers and listed on the U.S. Virgin Islands Government web site in recognition of their achievement.

Following the first year of the program, students who participated in the program and read five or more books were invited to attend a special ceremony with Governor de Jongh. These special "Fun Days" were held on St. Croix on October 24, 2009 and on St. Thomas on November 7, 2009. Additionally, 10 students who read 20 or more books were randomly selected to join the Governor onboard the cruise ship Disney Magic for a special luncheon as a reward for their achievement.
