Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. offered his deepest condolences to the families of two young women who died on Sunday morning, and his prayers for a third who is still fighting for her life. The three young ladies were victims of a motor vehicle accident on St. Thomas’ Weymouth Rhymer Highway.
“I was heartbroken yesterday morning when I first learned of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two young women and left a third seriously injured,” de Jongh said.
Aliya Robles, 17, and Jolicia Wilson, 18, were killed when a motorist lost control of her car and slammed into the pair as they were exercising at the base of the Donoe intersection. Their friend, 18-year-old Shatina Garnette, was critically injured, and is being treated at an off-island medical facility.
“We are all praying for Shatina's full recovery. I know the recent Kean graduate is a strong young woman, and I am confident she will pull through,” de Jongh said.
De Jongh said the senseless tragedy should serve as a call for all Virgin Islanders to do everything they can to prevent drunken driving on our territory's roads.
