Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. said this week that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has granted the Virgin Islands Housing Authority $720,000 to support programs that help the territory’s public housing residents become more self sufficient.
“The amount of this award, the largest that can be granted by the ROSS program, makes clear HUD recognizes and supports the important work being done by the V.I. Housing Authority in helping Virgin Islanders move beyond public housing toward greater financial stability and independence,” de Jongh said.
The size of the grant is the maximum that can be obtained through HUD’s Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) program.
The ROSS program awards grants to public housing authorities across the country that administer programs focusing on promoting upward economic mobility and helping families transition away from public housing.
The grants recognize effective local strategies to coordinate public and private resources and empower families to increase their income, become more financially literate, reduce their need for welfare assistance and make progress toward achieving economic independence.
