Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. today
offered condolences to the family members of former Virgin Islands First Lady, Mrs. Mary Phyllis Evans.
“On behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands, I extend heartfelt sympathies to her sons Melvin Jr., Robert, William and Cornelius as well as the extended Evans family,” de Jongh said.
Mrs. Evans, who died four days ago on the U.S. mainland, was a nurse by profession and for many years cared for her husband and sons in the role of wife and mother. “In fact, I am told
that former Governor and Mrs. Evans met at a hospital in New York,” de
Jongh remarked on Tuesday.
She was married to the last appointed and first elected former V.I. Governor Melvin Evans who during his career also served as the Virgin Islands Congressional Delegate and later, U.S. Ambassador.
Three of Evans’ sons are employed at the V.I. Justice Department.
