Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. on Wednesday extended heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Angelina Berry who died on July 2 at the age of 98.
“My wife, Cecile, my family and the people of the Virgin Islands join me in extending our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Berry’s immediate and extended family. She was clearly the matriarch of this large family and her loss will be felt across several generations of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Berry held the distinction of being the oldest French woman residing in our Northside community,” de Jongh said.
The governor noted Mrs. Berry’s passion for learning, travel, farming and tending to the family business but he said, “It seemed that none of those tasks meant more to her than providing for her late husband, her nine boys and six girls and in later years, her thirty-three grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Her life can be best described as her being devoted to her marriage of 58 years and to motherhood, and from all accounts, she did an outstanding job at both.”
De Jongh, who counts many of Mrs. Berry’s children among his friends, said Wednesday that clearly she lived a simple but wholesome life. “She provided for her family, looked out for her many friends and lived to a tender age of 98. For those that mourn her passing, there are indeed many memories of the times spent together, these cherished memories will last a lifetime.”
“May she rest in peace,” de Jongh said.
