Governor and First Lady de Jongh will host a group of approximately 65-80 education and literacy mentors, also known as the St. Croix Women’s Initiative, at Government House, St. Croix on Thursday. The group formed during the 2005/2006 school year and is dedicated to “improving the quality of life for the children of St. Croix,” according to their mission statement.
Members of the St. Croix Initiative have each contributed $1,000 per year toward financing the group’s objectives to provide key and critical resources to schools on St. Croix, including ten, public elementary schools.
Over the past five years, the group has raised and donated funds toward purchasing school books, computers, science equipment, musical instruments, sports equipment, fans and other critical items. The group also provides an age appropriate, color magazine published by Time/Life Magazine, “Time for Kids” for approximately 6,500 children, who each receive the magazine on a weekly basis.
As part of the group’s focus on working with St. Croix’s schools, ten women from the group lead teams to visit the public elementary schools to talk with faculty about ways to assist children’s educational efforts. Working in partnership with public, private, and non-profit sectors of the community, the St. Croix Women’s Initiative believes strongly in the importance of opening doors to provide additional learning opportunities for children.
First Lady Cecile de Jongh and Mrs. Cheryl Francis are honorary members of the St. Croix Women’s Initiative.
The press is invited to attend this special reception at Government House, St. Croix on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 6:00 PM.
