Public Works Commissioner Issues Update on St. Thomas Projects

Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls this weekend updated motorists about road construction projects moving forward on St. Thomas.

Smalls said landscaping work has begun along Long Bay Road, where two additional lanes recently opened between the Lucinda Millin Home and Mandela Circle. More than 20 royal palm trees will be planted over the next few days, and the extensive landscaping project—the first phase of beautification in the area— will continue for a couple weeks.

“When completed, the multi-year project will have eased traffic congestion on Long Bay Road. I encourage the public to admire the landscaping effort, and I remind St. Thomas residents the project, a public investment, should be protected from vandalism and other forms of destruction,” Smalls said Sunday.

Smalls reminded the motoring public that the Polyberg Road has been entirely reopened to accommodate Carnival traffic. The road between Charlotte Amalie High School and the Department of Education was partially closed for several months while crews were first reconstructing curbs, sidewalks and lanes, then working to install conduits connecting the two facilities. Construction will resume after Carnival with completion anticipated before the rainy season begins.
