Governor de Jongh Travels to Guam

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. departed the territory over the weekend and is in Guam at the invitation of Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs Anthony Babauta, Guam Governor Eddie Calvo and University of Guam President Robert Underwood.

The governor will participate in several meetings this week and will also be one of the speakers at a Guam Energy Task Force Meeting. At the meeting, de Jongh will present the territory’s energy roadmap and discuss the assistance provided by the Energy Development in Island Nations (EDIN) international partnership. The EDIN program assists island nations in adopting energy efficiency measures and in deploying renewable energy technologies. The partnership has been in place since 2008 and has been an important component of the governor’s efforts to meet his goals for the territory regarding the reduction, by year 2025, of its reliance on fossil fuel in order to generate electricity.

Later in the week, de Jongh will also address the University of Guam Lecture Series where he will speak at the University’s Center for Island Sustainability. The focus of the governor’s speech will be the similarities and differences between Guam and the American Territories, their shared successes and similar challenges.

The governor returns to the territory on Saturday, May 28. In his absence and in accordance with the provisions of the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, Lt. Governor Gregory Francis will serve as Acting Governor. When Lt. Governor Francis leaves the territory on Tuesday, Finance Commissioner Angel E. Dawson, Jr. will assume the position of Acting Governor.
