Public Works Commissioner Updates Public on St. Thomas Road Projects

Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls updated St. Thomas motorists today about a few road construction projects nearing completion on the island.

The Long Bay Road project has seen progress recently with two more lanes opening between the Lucinda Millin Home and Mandela Circle. Work is still ongoing, with Innovative Communications and the Virgin Island Water and Power Authority crews in the area. Motorists will notice the recent removal of overhead power lines along the road.

“The base course has already been laid, within two months final asphalt will be applied, and then landscaping crews will complete the multi-year project, which will ease traffic congestion on Long Bay Road and beautify the area. A new surface will also be applied soon along Racetrack Road, and the center lane will go back to functioning as a turning lane,” Smalls said Tuesday.

In Polyberg, the road between Charlotte Amalie High School and the Department of Education has been partially closed for several months while crews were first reconstructing curbs, sidewalks and lanes, then working to install conduits connecting the two facilities. This week, crews will pour concrete and prepare the two lanes so that the entire road can be in service for Carnival, then construction will resume after Carnival with full completion anticipated before the rainy season begins.

On the east end of the island, a contractor is working aggressively to complete repairs and drainage work along Brookman Road. During construction, additional springs were discovered in the area, known for problematic flooding during the rainy season. The project seeks to repair the badly damaged road and solve some of the drainage problems that cause flooding and destruction.

Smalls assured motorists that the road projects remain a priority for his agency and he is pushing all of the ongoing projects to completion as quickly as possible.
