Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. said today he was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sergeant Jorge A. Scatliffe, a 32-year-old St. Croix native serving his country in Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn.
A member of the 27th Brigade Support Battalion of the First Cavalry Division, Sgt. Scatliffe died April 3 near the Iraqi city of Mosul in a non-combat related incident. His death was announced by the Department of Defense today.
“The pain Jorge's family, friends and all Virgin Islanders feel right now is no doubt immense. But we are consoled in knowing he died a hero,
bravely serving his country and doing what he felt passionate about,” de Jongh said.
“On behalf of a grateful Virgin Islands community, my wife Cecile joins me in offering our deepest condolences to Sgt. Scatliffe’s family and all those who knew and loved him. In his life, he brought pride to this community, and now the community suffers together the tremendous loss of that life having been cut short,” de Jongh added.
