On Wednesday, Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr.
offered condolences to the loved ones of Enid Hodge after learning of
the passing of the cherished Virgin Islands educator, community
volunteer and Social Welfare official. Mrs. Hodge passed away Sunday at
the age of 94, she is the mother of former Lieutenant Governor Derek M.
Hodge.
“Enid Hodge was a great force in this
community, and she impacted countless lives with her wisdom, energy and
enthusiasm. She was also a tremendous link to our history, having been
born when the Virgin Islands were still part of Denmark,” de Jongh
said.
Hodge started her career as an educator
at Frederiksted Grammar School, and moved on to teach science, geometry,
algebra and English at Frederiksted Junior High School and Christiansted
Grammar, Junior High and Senior High Schools. Later, she worked for the
Department of Social Welfare for over a quarter of a century, retiring
as Assistant Commissioner for St. Croix in 1976.Throughout her life,
Hodge devoted herself to charitable work with organizations like the
American Cancer Society, the Community Chest, and St. John's Episcopal
Church.
“My wife, Cecile, and the people of the
Virgin Islands join me in extending our deepest sympathies to Derek and
Mrs. Hodge’s extended family. She will be missed, but her legacy lives
on in the work she did throughout her life and the people she educated
and influenced who went on to achieve great things,” de Jongh added.
