Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has signed a proclamation granting Administrative Leave to government workers for the celebration of the 59th anniversary of Carnival in the Virgin Islands.
Noting that “Virgin Islands Carnival has become one of the region’s top festivals and during this historical and festive season, hundreds of families, friends, visitors and supporters visit the territory to take partake in the cultural activities and the sights and sound of Carnival,” de Jongh authorized commissioners and agency heads to grant Administrative Leave to non-essential employees so as to encourage greater participation in the celebration. The leave granted does not apply to essential employees or those on a regular or rotating shift.
De Jongh outlined the Administrative Leave that will be issued:
District of St. Thomas – St. John only:
- Wednesday, May 4: 12 noon to 5 p.m. (Food, Arts and Crafts Fair Day)
- Thursday, May 5: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (J’ouvert)
Territory-wide:
- Friday, May 6: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Children’s Parade & Carnival Horse Races)
De Jongh congratulated Carnival Prince Tyrell S. Richardson and Princess J’Nee L. Powell and Carnival Queen Elisa Monee Thomas on their victories in recent competition. The governor also congratulated Collins Wesselhoft for whom the 2011 Carnival Village is named and Enid Donovan, the 2011 Food, Arts and Crafts Fair honoree for their many contributions to the success of the annual Carnival celebration.
