Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. said on Friday that the Virgin Islands as won a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to cover the cost of test fees for Advanced Placement (AP) students in the territory's public schools. “The State Advanced Placement Test Fee grant provides the Virgin Islands Department of Education with $29,640—an amount that will enable students in four Virgin Islands public high schools to take AP tests at the end of the school year,” de Jongh said.
De Jongh said this grant benefits some of our territory's brightest students and will help them advance their educations and succeed in life. “Students obtain college credit in high school by taking Advance Placement courses, improving their prospects of getting into good colleges and excelling at their studies when they are there,” he said.
Nine AP courses are offered at the four high schools throughout the territory. Thanks to the grant, AP exams will be administered by the College Board, from May 2 to May 20, this year at no cost to public school students.
Advanced Placement courses are offered in Biology, Calculus AB, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Studio Art, Spanish Language, Music Theory, Psychology and U.S. History.
