Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has offered condolences to the family of Michael Resch upon learning of the passing of the 87-year-old St. Thomas hotelier and tourism pioneer on Tuesday.
The governor said Resch and his wife, Lorette, played a major role in the development of the territory's hotel and tourism industry. Resch died while under hospice care at the Island Beachcomber Hotel, which he built almost six decades ago.
“Almost sixty years ago, the Reschs fell in love with St. Thomas. With their energy, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, they founded the island's first beach hotel, first car rental agency, and other unique businesses that paved the way for so many who followed,” the governor said, adding, that throughout their business endeavors, “the Reschs always were completely dedicated to the Virgin Islands and its people, and always followed their passions for sailing and spending time with friends.”
Michael Resch, de Jongh said, not only played a large role in establishing St. Thomas as a viable tourist destination, but he helped develop local resources to ensure its success, imparting his design and construction skills on many who had the privilege of working with him.
The Reschs were deeply involved with the Virgin Islands Hotel and Tourism Association, and were leaders in promoting the territory and developing its economy. “On behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands, Cecile and I offer our deepest condolences to Lorette Resch and the rest of Michael Resch's family. He will be missed.”
