Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. departed the territory this afternoon for Florida where he will attend meetings with cruise lines officials on Wednesday. The governor will be joined by Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty; Tourism Deputy Commissioner Chantal Figueroa; Police Commissioner Novelle E. Francis, Jr. and Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls.
“These meetings are part of our ongoing dialogue with the cruise industry as we continue to take the steps necessary to maintain St. Thomas’ prominence as a premier port of call in the Eastern Caribbean and as we encourage the cruise line industry to increase the port visits to St. Croix,” de Jongh said.
On Wednesday, de Jongh and his commissioners will meet with the Chief Executive Officer of Carnival Corporation, the President of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as well as with members of the Operations Committee of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association. Among the topics for discussion: continued development of the territory’s tourism product, infrastructure projects, an update on the continued rehabilitation work at Coki Point and future plans for the Eastern Caribbean itineraries and the potential for growth especially during the summer months.
De Jongh returns to the territory on Thursday. In his absence and in accordance with the provisions of the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, Lt. Governor Gregory R. Francis will serve as Acting Governor.
