Governor de Jongh
Expresses Condolences on the Death of
Attorney and Community Activist Edith Bornn
Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. today expressed condolences to the family of Edith Bornn echoing the sentiments of so many in the community who have referred to Mrs. Bornn as a strong woman with convictions and one who has left a legacy of community service.
“Mrs. Bornn, who died on Friday, spent her life championing the cause for environmental concerns in our territory. She will be remembered best for her work with the League of Women Voters of which she was a founding member, an organization in which she was elected president and one in which she served several terms as an officer,”
de Jongh said Monday.
de Jongh
said that through her work with the League of Women Voters, the Save Long Bay Coalition and the Virgin Islands Conservation Society, Mrs. Bornn advocated for the protection of beaches, the environment and fought for the protection of the territory’s natural resources. “She also opened the doors for an entire generation of women in the legal field, when she became the first female to enter private practice,”
de Jongh noted, adding, that he also recalled her dedication and commitment to the Family Resource Center from its inception.
“The territory has lost a giant of a person in the death of Edith
Bornn,” de Jongh said Monday. “Her memory should serve as an inspiration for all of us to strive for excellence and devote ourselves to the betterment of our community. My wife, Cecile, and the people of the Virgin Islands join me in extending condolences to the Bornn family on the loss of an individual who has contributed much to the Virgin Islands.”
