Phase One of Repairs and Enhancement of Lionel Roberts Stadium Now Underway

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. said Tuesday that the first phase of repairs and enhancements of Lionel Roberts Stadium on St. Thomas has begun. “The scope of work includes replacing the grandstand roof, renovating the restrooms and bleachers and improving the overall structural framing of this popular ball field which doubles from time to time as a venue for concerts, social events and Carnival events.” de Jongh said the stadium’s interior and exterior will also be painted during this upgrade work.

Housing, Parks and Recreation Commissioner St. Claire Williams said that through the enactment of Act No. 7081 that appropriated $1 million from the Bond proceeds for the renovation of the Lionel Roberts Stadium, “we are able to begin the long overdue improvements to the stadium utilizing local contractors.” Additionally, every effort is being made to continue the use of the playing field while certain aspects of the work on the stadium are being conducted and I urge everyone to be cautious and follow all posted signs and safety instructions at the worksite, he said.

“The Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation intends to complete the first phase of work in time for the Carnival activities in April and asks for the patience and cooperation of everyone during the construction period”, Williams concluded.
