Governor de Jongh's Statement on Earthquake in Haiti

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. Tuesday night said the prayers of the people of the Virgin Islands are with the residents of Haiti who experienced a catastrophic earthquake which has wreaked extensive damage across parts of the island nation.

“Eye witness accounts of the quake indicate a catastrophic situation,” de Jongh said, adding, that many Virgin Islanders have both family and friends in Haiti who are tonight anxiously awaiting word about the fate of their loved ones. “We pray that the recovery of the people of Haiti will be swift and that the Almighty has protected the lives of Haiti’s residents and visitors.”

de Jongh was briefed about the earthquake by VITEMA Director Mark A. Walters around 6:30 pm on Tuesday.
