Governor de Jongh Expresses Condolences on Death of V.I. Community Activist and Co-Founder of Women’s Resource Center, Dr. Alice Hamilton

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. said he was saddened to learn of the death of long-time community activist and philanthropist Dr. Alice Hamilton, co-founder of what is today the Family Resource Center of St. Thomas–St. John.

“Dr. Hamilton is best known for the leadership role she played over the years as she advocated for battered women as well as abused and neglected children,” de Jongh said, recalling that her work in the Virgin Islands began in the 1970’s when she coordinated and presented workshops on child abuse in several Caribbean islands including the Virgin Islands. “Dr. Hamilton eventually relocated to St. Thomas and co-founded the Women’s Resource Center which has now become the Family Resource Center of St. Thomas-St. John.”

For a number of years, Dr. Hamilton also provided counseling to individuals, families and clients of Kidscope, Inc. She was an active member in many of our community organizations and served as a founding board member for several others including: the V.I. Institute for Learning, Catholic Social Services / Catholic Charities and the Interfaith Coalition.

“The people of the Virgin Islands join me in expressing our gratitude for her many contributions to the Virgin Islands over the years. We pray that her family and friends will find solace and strength in knowing that the lives of so many Virgin Islanders were touched by the dedicated work of Dr. Alice Hamilton. May she rest in peace,” de Jongh said.
