Proclamation - Territorial Week of Prayer

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed July 4-10, 2011 as “Territorial Week of Prayer” in the Virgin Islands to recognize the important role of prayer and faith in our lives. Throughout our history, Americans have turned to prayer for comfort, inspiration, and strength. Prayer unites individuals and communities, provides healing, and allows us to overcome daily trials and tribulations.
During this designated week, we are reminded of the role of prayer in the American story and in shaping our Nation’s progress. From the earliest years of our country's history, special recognitions have been established and set aside by local, state and national governments to acknowledge the role of prayer in defining so many moments throughout our history. This Territorial Week of Prayer reminds us to be thankful for the liberty that allows people of all faiths to worship or not worship according to one’s inner compass or personal prerogative and encourages us to be thankful for the many other freedoms and blessings that we often take for granted.
The expression of faith enables us to persevere, overcome, and triumph. It brings families together, unites us in a common, human purpose and establishes our bonds as brothers and sisters of God.
Governor de Jongh encourages all citizens to embrace this opportunity to acknowledge the many sacrifices of the men and women of our Armed Forces, as well as the endurance of their families in support of the Territory and our Nation. We also pray for our first responders, including police officers, firefighters, and other dutiful Virgin Islanders who put themselves in harm's way every day to protect their fellow citizens. And we ask God for guidance in meeting the great challenges we collectively face as a Territory and as a Nation, and remember in our thoughts and prayers those in our greater world community. At a time when many around the world are troubled by uncertainty and unrest, while holding dear an unwavering hope for freedom and justice, we are mindful of the men, women and children who rightfully seek the same freedoms that we so greatly treasure in America.
Governor de Jongh calls upon Virgin Islanders to join him in observing this “Territorial Week of Prayer” in a manner appropriate to their own faith and beliefs, to pray for salvation from all forms of violence in the Territory, and to ask for God’s continued blessings and forgiveness.

PROCLAMATION
BY THE GOVERNOR

UNITED STATES VIRGIN
ISLANDS
TO PROCLAIM TERRITORIAL WEEK OF PRAYER
IN THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN
ISLANDS |

| WHEREAS, we
recognize our dependence on the Almighty and
thank him for the many blessings He has bestowed
upon us; and WHEREAS,
we place our Territory's future in His hands;
and
WHEREAS, Prayer
unites people, provides healing and allows us to
overcome the trials and tribulations we face
daily; and
WHEREAS, it is especially
important
that we give thanks and show our appreciation
for the Almighty's continued guidance for He is
our rock and our salvation;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John P.
de Jonqh, Jr., Governor of the
United States Virgin Is1ands, by virtue of the authority vested
in me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby
proclaim the week of July 4-10, 2011 as, as "Territorial
Week of Prayer." I
call upon the people of the Virgin Islands to
join with me in this observance, each according
to his/her own way, to seek the Almighty's
deliverance from the grip of gun, domestic and
all violence in the Territory, and ask for His forgiveness,
peace and prosperity for all of us.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and cause
the Seal. of the Government of the Virgin Islands
of the United States to be affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin
Islands, this 24th day of June, A.D., 2011.
