UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 9, 2011

Gubernatorial Proclamation - September 11th Patriot Day: A Day of Remembrance

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed September 11, 2011 as “Patriot Day: A Day of Remembrance” in the Virgin Islands to remember those whose lives were suddenly, without cause, and pointlessly taken on September 11, 2001.

The innocent victims of September 11 will always be remembered and will forever be loved. They did not die in vain, and by celebrating their lives each year we focus world opinion upon the eradication of inhumane acts of terrorism perpetrated around the globe.

There is no better way to commemorate September 11th each year than by promoting global peace and goodwill, demonstrating America’s resolve and perseverance to win the war on terrorism, advancing responsible citizenship, encouraging patriotism and love of country and remembering the innocent victims who died that day as heroes.

The unprovoked attacks upon America by foreign terrorists thrust the United States and other countries into military actions they never envisioned. The challenges facing all the civilized people of the world will not end until those responsible for the September 11 attacks are eliminated or brought to justice.

While we fight the war on terror, it is important to remember America is fully committed to ensuring our freedoms remain unfettered and sovereign for all generations, now and forever.

Governor de Jongh will march with American Legionnaires and members of the St. Croix Community Sunday morning. The “America Supports You Freedom Walk” will begin at 11 a.m. at Bassin Triangle and will end with a ceremony held at American Legion Headquarters.

All churches in the Virgin Islands will observe a moment of silence to honor the victims, and will ring their bells four times to mark the times the four hijacked planes went down, and a final time to again remember those whose lives were cut short on that fateful day.

Governor de Jongh asks all who can to join him in the St. Croix march, and calls upon all Virgin Islanders to pay tribute in any way they see fit to the sacrifice of those killed on September 11, 2001.

“May they forever rest in peace and abide in our memories,” the governor said.
