OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gubernatorial Proclamation - Rotary Week

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed the week of April 11-16, 2011 as “Rotary Week” in the U.S. Virgin Islands in recognition of the contributions of local Rotary Clubs in making the territory a better place to live.

Rotary clubs provide humanitarian services and build goodwill in our communities and abroad. Members comprise a global network of more than 28,000 community-based clubs, with a world membership of over 1.2 million people. Their efforts are inspirational and action-oriented and provide assistance and leadership on important initiatives such as the worldwide eradication of polio and other issues including illiteracy, child mortality, clean water, and hunger. Rotary is especially well-recognized for its community-based projects in the Virgin Islands focusing on youth, education, violence, drug abuse, hurricane and disaster relief.

As part of Rotary Week, District 7020 will be holding their annual Training, Assembly and Conference at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef on April 11 through 16. District 7020 comprises 80 Rotary Clubs from 10 island countries, including: Haiti, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands, USVI, BVI, Anguilla, St. Barts and St. Martin. There are 5 Rotary Clubs in St. Thomas, 4 in St. Croix and 1 in St. John. Each club is a model of service and dedication to the community. With their motto of “Service above Self,” Rotarians encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and have repeatedly demonstrated the effectiveness of community-based action in achieving small and large-scale goals at local and international levels.

Governor de Jongh calls upon all Virgin islanders to join him in observing Rotary Week and supporting the territory’s 10 Rotary clubs and their many charitable endeavors.
