UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 20, 2011

Gubernatorial Proclamation - Public Service Recognition Week

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 22-28, 2011 as “Public Service Recognition Week” in the U.S. Virgin Islands to honor public employees and recognize the important work they do on behalf of all Virgin Islanders.

Through this recognition, governments around the nation celebrate and identify the important contributions that public employees offer to our country. Observed since 1985, each year the President and Congress designate a full week in May to this important recognition, and activities are held nationwide in observance of those who put service above self.

Through innumerable contributions to the science, process and art of public administration, Virgin Islanders have fostered advances in services at all levels of government and in all functional and program fields. By recognizing the value of public service, we reinforce the efforts of public employees to promote excellence in territorial services offered to individuals, organizations, and the public at large.

Next week, the Virgin Islands will join the rest of the nation in recognizing public employees who excel in performance and efforts to improve public service by honoring outstanding employees within each department and agency of the territory’s government. It is fitting to honor and commend those employees who have been selected by their respective departments as “Employee of the Year” for their diligence, outstanding work, and contributions to their departments and agencies. The V.I. 22nd Employee Recognition Award Ceremonies will be held at the Wyndham Sugar Bay and the Divi Carina Bay.

Governor de Jongh encourages the community, as well as the public and private sectors, to hold programs promoting improved understanding and strengthened administration of public service through the interchange and identification of common public administration objectives.
