FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gubernatorial Proclamation - National Day of Prayer

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 5, 2011 as “National Day of Prayer” in the U.S. Virgin Islands to recognize faith and prayer for the guidance they provide in the lives of so many Virgin Islanders.

Throughout the history of this nation and this territory, people have turned to prayer in times of joy and in times of uncertainty. In prayer, they have sought guidance, protection, assistance and forgiveness.

Since 1952, the Congress of the United States has set aside and proclaimed the first Thursday of May of each year as a National Day of Prayer to give thanks for the many blessings the Lord has bestowed upon the American people.

This year, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of this historic celebration.

We can congregate, worship and pray freely, whether in public or in private, as exercise of religion is one of our most cherished and fundamental freedoms.

This annual observance has become a unifying force, not only for citizens of our great nation, but also for residents of the territory who come from various religious backgrounds. Prayer unites people, sustaining healing and allowing us to overcome the trials and tribulations we face daily.

The proclamation reads: “It is especially important that we continuously give thanks and show our gratitude, humility, and appreciation for our Heavenly Father's continued guidance, wisdom and support, both in good times and in bad, for He is our rock and our salvation.”

Governor de Jongh calls upon all Virgin Islanders to join him in commemorating the 60th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer in whatever way they feel is appropriate, and in expressing gratitude to live in a place where people of diverse faiths can express and live their most cherished beliefs freely.
