Gubernatorial Proclamation - Men and Young Men Health Mentorship Day

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed June 24, 2011 as “Men and Young Men Health Mentorship Day” in the Virgin Islands to promote understanding of health issues facing men of all ages.

Men can take greater responsibility for their health when they have the proper knowledge and understanding of the health threats to which they are susceptible. Through the efforts of local and community organizations working with health partners and volunteers, we can improve awareness of key health issues, allowing men to live fuller, more productive lives.

The Virgin Islands Department of Health offers community health, mental health and family planning programs geared toward young men. These programs educate men about safe sex practices, diabetes, hypertension, chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer, and lifestyle choices that can prevent disease and improve overall health.

Several events will take place on June 24 throughout the community in recognition of this designated day. To mark the fourth annual Men and Young Men Health Mentorship Day, young men from public, private and parochial schools, as well as church youth groups, will participate in a special event at Schneider Hospital. At the event, the winners of the 2011 scholarship and essay contest will be announced. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lee Whitaker, the Department of Health's Territorial Medical Director, who will provide mentees and mentors with personal insight on men’s health and wellness, as well as career and life planning guidance. A dinner reception will follow.

Governor de Jongh urges Virgin Islands residents and community organizations to work together to improve the health of our territory's men and to increase awareness and understanding of the health issues they face.
