Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed October 4-9, 2011 as “Fashion Week” in the Virgin Islands to promote the territory's fashion industry and emphasize “Fashion Tourism.”
Virgin Islands Fashion Week was established in 2007 as a week-long fashion destination event, providing emerging designers and other fashion industry professionals with a platform to showcase their talent and market their businesses to local, regional and international audiences.
“By holding and promoting Fashion Week, we are helping the territory expand its prominence in the areas of arts and culture, and become recognized as the premier fashion destination in the Caribbean,” de Jongh said.
The Department of Tourism has sponsored a trip for members of the media to cover Fashion Week and tour the island. Visiting reporters include: Leticia Reyes and Sandra Quinones of En La Escena TV, Ian Holness of Direct Music TV America, and Anil J. Ramharack of Caribbean Life.
Fashion enthusiasts, consumers, news personalities and celebrities have attended Virgin Islands Fashion Week in the past, bringing with them international recognition for the Virgin Islands through partnerships, independent designers and fashion related companies.
The Virgin Islands has a long history of celebrating the contributions of creative citizens, and fashion related entrepreneurship is an important part of the territory's economy. Fashion Week is a celebration of creativity through fashion that brings together Virgin Islands residents and visitors.
Governor de Jongh encourages Virgin Islanders to participate in Fashion Week, and thanks the private sponsors who organized the event for their generosity and spirit of volunteerism.
