Gubernatorial Proclamation - Emergency Medical Services Week

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 15-21, 2011 as “Emergency Medical Services Week” in the U.S. Virgin Islands to pay tribute to the dedicated professionals who provide emergency medical services, and to educate the public about proper response channels for such emergencies.

Emergency Medical Services are vital to the public welfare. Members of emergency medical teams devote their lives to saving the lives of others suffering life threatening injuries, and Virgin Islanders derive tremendous benefits from the knowledge and skill of these trained and highly motivated professionals.

Emergency medical services teams consist of emergency room physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, educators and administrators. Their professional organizations promote research to improve and adapt their skills as new methods of emergency treatment are developed, and we are grateful for their diligence as first responders in our community.

The members of emergency medical services teams encourage the standardization of training to help ensure high quality and consistent care across all emergency services personnel; credentials are standardized within the U.S. states and territories.

The designation of Emergency Medical Services Week, in addition to recognizing the value and accomplishments of medical professionals, serves as an opportunity to educate the people of the Virgin Islands on accident prevention and general medical emergency response.

Governor de Jongh calls upon all Virgin Islanders to support the emergency healthcare professionals who devote their lives to saving the lives of others.
