UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 21, 2011

Gubernatorial Proclamation - Earth Day

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed April 22, 2011 as “Earth Day” in the U.S. Virgin Islands to focus attention on the natural environment and reducing pollution.

This year's theme is “Earth Day 2011: A Billion Acts of Green” – the largest environmental service campaign in the world, focusing on the environmental impact of millions of people, as well as corporations and organizations making both small and large commitments to better the environment.

Earth Day has been set aside to highlight Planet Earth, our mutual home, and to bring a global feeling of community through realization of our deepening desire for life, freedom and love, as well as our dependence on each other.

On the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day, it is important to remember that the delicate balances of nature, essential for the survival of the planet and for our own well-being, be maintained through a global effort involving all nations and all peoples.

Through reading and education, we can learn and become more aware of our natural environment and our role as an integral part of that environment. Understanding the connection between human survival and the diverse web of biological life gives us a better sense of how we can preserve this planet.

To celebrate Earth Day, Governor and First Lady de Jongh, along with members of the V.I. Department of Agriculture, were joined by students from the Gladys A. Abraham Elementary School Garden Club to dedicate the first lady’s Herb and Tea Garden at Government House on St. Thomas. The garden club will maintain the plot moving forward, including weeding and watering the plants.

Governor de Jongh calls upon all Virgin Islanders to join him in observing the 42nd celebration of Earth Day and Earth Week by becoming more aware of the natural environment and by doing their part to preserve the environment for future generations to enjoy.
