Gubernatorial Proclamation - Disability Awareness Month

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed the month of March as “Disability Awareness Month”– a time to reaffirm our commitment to fulfill both the letter and the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act, further ensuring that people with disabilities enjoy full participation in the mainstream of Virgin Islands life.

Disabilities are a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminish the right of people who have them to live independently, enjoy self-determination, make choices and contribute to society.

The Virgin Islands is fully committed to the provisions of the ADA because we need the skills, talents and abilities of every one of our citizens. It is important that we recognize the tremendous value and potential of people with disabilities, for whom independence and self-reliance are important qualities to achieve.

Today, many of the barriers facing people with disabilities are being knocked down, thereby opening up new avenues and providing opportunities for advancement. The Virgin Islands government remains committed to the empowerment, integration, employment and full inclusion of every one of our citizens with disabilities.

In signing the proclamation, the governor called on all Virgin Islanders to join him in working to ensure people with disabilities enjoy full participation in mainstream life.
