Gubernatorial Proclamation - Crime and Gun Violence Prevention Day

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 22, 2011 as “Crime and Gun Violence Prevention Day” in the Virgin Islands to raise community consciousness on the need to combat the scourge of crime and guns in the territory.

Safety in our homes, schools, and streets is paramount, and freedom from the fear of violence is something we must insist upon for both residents and visitors to our islands. As such, it is critical that we continue to take steps to work together as a community and as a government to reduce crime, especially gun violence.

The community acknowledges the tremendous toll and devastation that violence has taken on the territory. The future of all who love these islands, young and old, depends on community organizations working alongside parents, schools, church organizations, and government agencies to impart new ideas and concepts to deter violence.

The Virgin Islands government supports the efforts of various local and national groups, who by their continuous and tireless work to reduce crime and violence in our communities, strive to improve the lives of youth and the quality of life in this territory.

In recognition of this proclamation, Mothers Against Guns, Inc. will hold its 8th Annual Walk/Run against Gun Violence on Sunday, May 22. The rally commences at 4:00 p.m. from the Coast Guard Dock, at the Waterfront, to Frenchtown, St. Thomas.

De Jongh urges all Virgin Islands residents to participate in Crime and Gun Violence Prevention Day events as a way to unite against the evils of senseless violence. The governor reminds all concerned residents that the best way to combat crime is to report any criminal behavior to the Police Department, Justice Department, or anyone trusted to pass along the information to the proper authorities. Such involvement from citizens will reduce crimes and gun violence in our community.
