Gubernatorial Proclamation - Catholic Schools Week

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has signed a proclamation designating the week of January 29-February 4, 2011 as “Catholic Schools Week” in the Virgin Islands in appreciation of the contributions Catholic schools make in educating our youth.

The national theme of this year's Catholic Schools Week celebration is “A+ for America: Pursuit of High Academic Achievement,” a fitting tribute to designate this week’s observance.

Catholic education was introduced on St. Thomas in the mid-1800s; today there are four Catholic schools in the Virgin Islands, including Sts. Peter and Paul School on St. Thomas, and St. Mary, St. Patrick and St. Joseph schools on St. Croix.

At these schools, the teachers, staff and administrators strive to impart on each student the best academic and moral education possible. They each have advanced the intellectual standards of their students, and made important contributions to educating the territory's youngsters.

Virgin Islands Catholic schools offer educations that provide valuable tools for our young people as they progress through life, guiding the development of young minds and the community at large.

Governor de Jongh calls on Virgin Islanders to mark Catholic Schools Week by joining him in recognizing the outstanding educational contributions of our four, local, Catholic schools.
