| WHEREAS, April 2011 has been declared
"Autism Month" in the Virgin Islands, to increase and develop knowledge of the autism
epidemic and to impart information regarding the importance of
early diagnosis and early intervention of this disease; and
WHEREAS, Autism as a growing global health crisis; and
WHEREAS, it is of great importance that the unique talents and
skills of persons with Autism be warmly welcomed and embraced in
community events in the Territory; and
WHEREAS, there is a need to focus attention on Autism with the
goal of improving the lives of children and adults who suffer from
the disorder so they can lead full and meaningful lives; and
WHEREAS Autism is a lifelong disability, which includes a
group of brain development disorders that typically develop during
an individual ' s first three years of life;
NOW THEREFORE, I, John P. de Jongh, Jr., Governor of the
United States Virgin Islands, by virtue of the authority vested in
me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby
proclaim April 2011 as "Autism Month" in the Virgin Islands. I
call upon residents to join with me, become more aware of Autism
and its symptoms, thereby developing a greater awareness and
understanding of those persons who suffer from this
disease, and to especially support their families .
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the
Seal of the Government of the United States Virgin Islands
to be affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, this
