| WHEREAS, Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually by our Nation on the third Saturday of May of each year; and WHEREAS, the first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on
Saturday, May 20, 1950 with the theme "Teamed for Defense", which expressed the unification
of all military forces under one of government department;
and
WHEREAS, it is a day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve the United States' armed forces and to provide the public
with a greater understanding of the role of the military
and
WHEREAS, each year, on the third Saturday of May we express our respect and gratitude to the members of the United States Armed
Forces for their service in protecting our Nation and
keeping peace throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, it is important that we honor those who have kept our
Nation strong and our freedom secure; and
WHEREAS, our Armed Forces have been steadfast guardians of peace and
liberty;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John P.
de Jonqh, Jr., Governor of the
United States Virgin Is1ands, by virtue of the authority vested
in me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby
proclaim Saturday, May 21, 2011 as "Armed Forces
Day" in the United States Virgin Islands in
honor of the men and women in our Armed Forces.
I invite all residents to join me in this
observance.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and cause
the Seal. of the Government of the Virgin Islands
of the United States to be affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin
