Gubernatorial Proclamation - Armed Forces Day

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 20, 2011 as “Armed Forces Day” in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve the United States’ Armed Forces and to provide the public with a greater understanding of the role of the Unites States military.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated in 1950 with the theme “Teamed for Defense,” to express the unification of all military forces under one government department.

Each year, we express our respect and gratitude to the members of the United States Armed Forces for their service in protecting this nation and keeping peace throughout the world.

Our Armed Forces have been steadfast guardians of peace and liberty, keeping this nation strong and our freedom secure.

Governor de Jongh proclaims Armed Forces Day in honor of the men and women who have served in the U.S. military, and invites all Virgin Islanders to join him in this important observance.
