Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. has executed a proclamation to provide administrative leave to non-essential government employees for the 2011-2012 Christmas holidays and Crucian Christmas Festival.
The proclamation provides that administrative leave will be granted as follows:
- Territory-wide:
Monday, January 2, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- St. Croix Only: Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On this day, St. Croix will celebrate the Festival J’ouvert and the Food, Arts and Craft Fair
The administrative leave granted on January 2 and January 4 does not apply to essential employees, employees on a regular or rotating shift, and employees on annual or sick leave. Additionally, administrative leave was not required on Monday, December 26, 2011 or Friday, January 6, 2012 as both days are legal holidays in the Virgin Islands. The proclamation notes that the Christmas holiday season is one of merriment, joy and gathering of family and friends to enjoy and pass on the many cultural traditions of the festive occasion. The St. Croix Festival provides a boost to the economy and helps to promote an understanding and appreciation of our culture. "The granting of leave on these two days encourages greater participation in the annual food fair and enhances the celebration of the Christmas Festival by all residents and
visitors," de Jongh noted.
In response the repeated inquiries, on Friday, December 23 and Friday, December 30, the Virgin Islands government offices will operate under normal business hours.
