Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the
month of September as “Labor Awareness Month” in the Virgin Islands.
As we continue our recovery efforts from
this recession, it behooves us to recognize the hard working men and
women who have built the Virgin Islands economy and who have contributed
and continue to contribute greatly to the strength, prosperity, progress
and well-being of this territory.
This recession has brought with it much
change. Our success as a territory rests largely on the skills and
abilities of our workforce. In order for the U.S. Virgin Islands to
remain competitive in the global economy our workers will have to be
trained, re-trained and educated in order to take advantage of emerging
jobs. Employers must also recognize their role in helping their
employees to remain competitive by providing the necessary tools to be
productive. In addition, we must continue to invest heavily in preparing
our youths to transition to gainful employment and becoming productive
citizens of this community.
We must all work together if we are to
make a complete recovery from this economic downturn. Our public and
private sector businesses, unions, and community organizations must
commit to this effort by ensuring that every Virgin Islander receives a
sound education, vocational skills training and employment
opportunities. To this end, the deJongh Administration is solidly
committed.
Governor deJongh calls upon all residents
of the territory to join in this observance and to participate in the
activities scheduled for this month.
