Gubernatorial
Proclamation - Women's Health Week
Gov. John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed the week of May 9-15, 2010 as “Women’s Health Week” in the Territory. During this week we celebrate progress made over the years in advancing women’s health and empowering women to make their health a top priority. With the theme, “It’s Your Time,” the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life.
By taking steps to promote health and prevent disease and illness, women can improve their physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. Recognizing that women’s health remains a priority for families, communities, and government, we are committed to raising awareness on important and unique health care needs of all women from all backgrounds.
In the Virgin Islands, expanding our understanding and awareness of health issues faced by today's women, and by future generations, will help our society become more productive and prosperous. We must recognize the critical need to properly safeguard the health of women by building strong partnerships with social and healthcare services providers, and by providing avenues of education and awareness at all times.
The most important steps women can take to improve their health include eating a well balanced, nutritious diet; getting regular physical activity; avoiding unhealthy behaviors, like smoking; and paying attention to mental health. In addition, women should get regular checkups and preventive screenings.
During
National Women’s Health Week, it is important to tell our mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts, and girlfriends to take the time to improve their health and prevent disease in order to live longer, healthier, and happier lives. After all, when women take even simple steps to improve their health, the results can be significant and everyone benefits.
Governor de Jongh urges Virgin Islanders to join him in observing Women’s Health Week by considering how each one of us can help increase awareness of issues that will improve the health and wellness of all women in the Territory, and ultimately, for the Territory in total.
