Gubernatorial Proclamation - Week of the Young Child

Gov. John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed the week of April 11-17, 2010 as the “Week of the Young Child” in the Territory. During this week, we recognize and support the needs of all young children growing up in the Virgin Islands and focus our attention on their talents and capabilities.

Our youth deserve love, respect and nurturing, regardless of their background. No child should feel isolated from our society. We have a responsibility to harness and positively channel their energies, so that they may mature to meet their vast potential. This not only benefits the children, but our entire society.

Young children are the future of our beloved islands, and their early childhood experiences ultimately shape our collective destiny. It is important that we show all children love, teach them manners and respect for others, and guide them as they develop socially and professionally.

To best serve our children, we can work to unify our communities, with the goal of teaching important values from the experience. We must also continue calling attention to the need for early childhood services for all children and families in the Virgin Islands in order to improve their quality and availability.

Governor de Jongh calls on all Virgin Islanders to join the Government, Virgin Islands Early Childhood Association, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children in celebrating the Week of the Young Child and demonstrating a commitment to our children’s future by promoting their positive values and heightening awareness of their many talents.
