Gubernatorial Proclamation - Virgin Islands History Month

Gov. John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed the month of March as “Virgin Islands History Month” in the Territory. During this month, we recognize the many contributions of Virgin Islanders throughout history toward the progress and enrichment of humanity within our islands, the greater Caribbean, the United States and throughout the world.

This month, as specially proclaimed, is a time to celebrate and commemorate the great events that have shaped the history and culture of the territory, as we honor the heroes, past and present, who have enriched the lives of Virgin Islanders and so many others. Many important events in Virgin Islands history have taken place in March, including Transfer Day.

In paying tribute to Virgin Islands history, we highlight the culture and achievements of the territory's peoples, as well as their many contributions in a variety of fields and disciplines, including: music, art, folklore, dance, cuisine and technical processes.

Observing Virgin Islands History Month, especially for the territory's youth, instills pride, loyalty, and respect for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Gov. de Jongh urges all residents of the territory and abroad to join with him in paying tribute to the heritage and legacy of Virgin Islanders of all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, faiths, and beliefs.
