Gubernatorial
Proclamation - Tourism Week
Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 8-16, 2010 as “Tourism Week” in the territory so as to foster awareness about the impact of tourism on the local economy and emphasize the importance of providing the best service to tourists who visit the Virgin Islands.
Providing exceptional customer service is essential to the success of our destination and our future prosperity. For that reason, it is important to practice great customer service techniques. During Tourism Week, the V.I. Department of Tourism is sponsoring a series of free customer service workshops throughout the territory. The workshops will be conducted by Dr. Bryan Williams, a Virgin Islander and professional service trainer.
The Department of Tourism is also engaging Virgin Islands students to begin thinking about and practicing good customer service techniques. A contest developed for fifth-graders challenges students to create a skit that dramatizes 10 customer service standards including smiling, making eye contact and using a customer’s name. The skits will be recorded and broadcast on the Government Access Channel, Innovative Cable Channel 10, and the winning class will be treated to a field trip.
De Jongh encourages our students to explore the diversity of tourism-related careers during this week’s career fairs, and asks all Virgin Islands to consider the importance of tourism to this territory’s economic livelihood and participate in the many events scheduled for tourism week.
