Proclamation - Public Service Recognition Week
Gov. John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed the week of May 23-29, 2010 as “Public Service Recognition Week” in the Territory to honor outstanding public service employees within each department and agency of the Territory's government. We are pleased to take this important opportunity to highlight the many ways in which the government serves its people, including how to better inform Virgin Islanders of the broad variety of services provided by government.
This week, governments around the nation celebrate, recognize and identify the important contributions that public employees offer to our country. Observed since 1985, each year, the President and Congress designate a full week in May to this weekly recognition, and activities are held nationwide in recognition of those who put service above self.
From the steps of the Capitol to the smallest towns, communities take this occasion to host events from open houses to parades recognizing and thanking their local, unsung heroes. This year’s theme, “Innovation and Opportunity,” gives citizens the chance to see the breadth of groundbreaking work being done in government, from renewable energy programs to tsunami early warning systems, in order to explore the many ways to make a difference by choosing careers in public service.
On this auspicious occasion, we also honor and commend those employees who have been selected by their respective departments and agencies as “Employee of the Year” for their diligence, outstanding work ethic, and overall contributions to their departments, agencies and community.
Governor de Jongh encourages all residents of the community, as well as the public and private sectors, to support programs promoting improved understanding and strengthened administration of public service through the interchange and identification of common public administration goals and objectives.
In recognition of this week’s designation, award ceremonies will be held in both districts, including: on Wednesday, May 26 at the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas at 10:00 a.m. and on Friday, May 28 at Teddy’s restaurant on St. Croix at 2:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $15 at the Division of Personnel in both districts. Space is limited.
