UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

Gubernatorial Proclamation - Older Americans Month

Gov. John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 2010 as “Older Americans Month” in the Territory and calls on Virgin Islanders to show appreciation to senior citizens for their tremendous contributions to our society.

This year, the theme for Older Americans Month is “Age Strong! Live Long.” This phrase is one taken to heart by the Territory’s seniors, who share with us the knowledge, wisdom and experience that can only be acquired over a long lifetime.

So many Virgin Islands seniors choose to dedicate their time and energy to community-based activities and programs that provide additional avenues of education and enrichment for the broader population. In so doing, they provide precious leadership skills that guide our social progress and connect younger generations to their cultural heritage and fascinating history. We appreciate their tremendous generosity of spirit and acknowledge their many contributions to our collective benefit.

To show our rightful appreciation, we must work together to ensure seniors receive the care, comfort and respect they so rightfully deserve. For that reason, Governor de Jongh champions public and private programs that create comprehensive services truly responsive to the needs of older Americans. Seniors require wide-ranging options so they may thrive in the lifestyles that suit them best as they age.

To honor the spirit of Older Americans Month, First Lady Cecile de Jongh is spearheading an initiative to publicly document the lives of older Virgin Islanders. Throughout May, videos of seniors will play on Government Access Channels 6 and 10. Those seniors featured describe their family life and accounts of growing up in the Territory. They share anecdotes and personal stories for the benefit and edification of the broader Virgin Islands community.

Governor de Jongh calls on all Virgin Islanders to join with every other American state and Territory in observing Older Americans month. The Governor urges all appropriate government agencies, civic and community organizations, non-profits and all the Territory’s residents to work together toward creating systems that improve the standard and quality of life for our beloved senior citizens.
