Memorial
Day in the United States Virgin Islands
WHEREAS,
Memorial Day was established more than one
years ago to commemorate those who died in
defense of our national ideals - freedom,
justice, and equal rights; and
WHEREAS, the
observance of Memorial Day is one of America's
noblest traditions. At its core lies the most
basic of the beliefs on which our Nation as
founded: that freedom is so precious it is
worth the price of our lives to preserve it;
and
WHEREAS,
Virgin Islanders are proud to serve our
country as it strives to maintain a delicate
world peace; and
WHEREAS, this
day is set aside to unite people of the United
States and the Territory in prayer for a
permanent world peace, and to give thanks for
the great blessings of freedom and peace; and
WHEREAS. we must
protect the ideals for which these Americans
so valiantly gave of themselves;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John P.
de Jongh, Jr., Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby proclaim
Monday, May 31, 2010 as "Memorial
Day" in the United States Virgin Islands. I
call upon the people of the Virgin Islands to
unite in this observance, to pray for a
lasting peace, and to participate in the
activities scheduled for this day.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Government of the United States Virgin Islands to be affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, this
