Gubernatorial
Proclamation - Law Day
Gov. John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 1, 2010 as “Law Day” in the Territory, a designation that provides an opportunity for Virgin Islands residents to examine our efforts to ensure equal justice for all and to recognize the work of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals toward that end.
While every society has challenges and even threats to its way of life, the rule of law allows us to survive these challenges, to progress and advance as members of the broader world community. On this day, we are reminded of the just cause to celebrate our heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under law for the betterment of our society.
Over the years, our nation has been witness to the great struggle against terrorism and threats from others who scoff at our freedoms and who depreciate the values this great nation was built on. In confronting these threats, we must preserve our liberties, the foundation of this nation and our way of life. While others may wish to threaten our democracy, and the very rule of law, together we continue to improve and perfect our democracy in the name of “justice for all” by improving our courts, strengthening our laws and our justice system.
Governor de Jongh calls on Virgin Islanders to celebrate Law Day by dedicating ourselves to the great values protected and preserved in our Constitution. It is important that we all work together to protect and perfect our democracy.
On this important day, the Governor encourages the Territory's schools, business organizations, news media and citizens to commemorate Law Day by raising awareness of the role of law in our society and in our lives.
