Crime
and Gun Violence Prevention Day in the Virgin
Islands
WHEREAS, it is to be recognized that safety in our homes, in
our schools, and in our streets, and freedom
from the fear of violence is important to our residents and visitors to the Virgin
Islands; and
WHEREAS, the residents and visitors to the Virgin Islands
deplore these senseless acts of violence especially gun violence ;
WHEREAS, the future of the children, youth and all residents
of the Virgin Islands depends to a very large extent upon the
involvement of community organizations working along with
parents , schools , church organizations, and government agencies
to impart ideas and new concepts that dater violence; and
WHEREAS, it is
fitting that we join together with local and national groups who by their continuous and tireless efforts in
working to reduce crime and violence in our communities strive to
improve the lives of the youth and the quality of life in the
Virgin Islands; and
WHEREAS, the community acknowledges the tremendous toll and
devastation that violence in the Virgin Islands has taken and to
set aside a day to raise the consciousness of the community and
to unite to combat crime and gun violence;
NOW,
THEREFORE, I , John P. de Jongh, Jr. , Governor of the
United States Virgin Islands, by virtue of the authority vested in
me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby
proclaim Sunday, May 16, 2010 as "CRIME AND GUN VIOLENCE
PREVENTION DAY" in the United States Virgin Islands to raise the
consciousness of the community to reduce crime
and stop violence.
I call upon all residents to join with me in observance of this
occasion and to participate in the activities scheduled for this
day . I further call upon residents to call the Virgin Islands
Police Department, the Attorney General Office, a
Minister, friend, or colleague and give information on crimes which will
reduce the incidents of crime and gun violence in our community.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused
the Seal of the Government of the United States Virgin Islands to
affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St . Thomas, Virgin
Islands, this 28th day of April, A.D., 2010.
