Census
Day in the United States Virgin Islands
WHEREAS a national census has been conducted every ten years since 1790 as required by the United States Constitution; and
WHEREAS the Twenty-third United States Census, known as “Census 2010” will be conducted this year; and
WHEREAS an accurate census count is vital for planning for our community and residents’ well-being; and
WHEREAS the 2010 Census will collect information which will determine how federal funding is allocated to states and territories; and
WHEREAS the data collected by the 2010 Census is protected by law and remains confidential for 72 years; and
WHEREAS it is important that we support the goals and ideals of the 2010 Census, the Census takers and participate fully in the Census process thereby ensuring an accurate count which determines federal funding allocations;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John P.
de Jongh, Jr., Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby proclaim Thursday, April 1, 2010 as “Census
Day” in the United States Virgin Islands. I urge all residents, civic and community organizations to join with me to ensure that every individual fulfill their civic and legal duty and complete the Census forms. It is important that the Territory produce an accurate count as it is the primary source of information which determines the level of federal support the Territory will receive for the next decade.
