UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 31, 2010

Gubernatorial Proclamation - Census Day

Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed Thursday, April 1 as “Census Day” in the territory and urges all Virgin Islanders to participate in the upcoming census process.

Census 2010, the 23rd United States Census, is currently underway. Information gathered from this process determines the allotment of federal funding and support to the Territory for the upcoming decade. For this reason, it is essential that all residents of the Virgin Islands fulfill their civic duty and complete their census forms. An accurate count of our population and demographics ensures we receive our fair share of federal funding, and is important for community planning.

Since 1790, a national census has been completed every ten years, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Data collected during the census is protected and remains confidential for 72 years.

de Jongh asks all civic, religious and community organizations in the territory to join him in advocating for a full and accurate census as it is in the best interest of the Virgin Islands and all its people.
