GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH IN THE TERRITORY Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed September 2008 as “Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month” in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month celebrates the tremendous strides taken by individuals who have undergone successful treatment, families in recovery, and recognizes those in the treatment field who have dedicated their lives to helping people recover from addiction. Over the last 20 years, medical science has made great strides in learning about substance abuse and the nature of addiction. Substance abuse is a major public health problem that affects millions of people of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds, and in all communities, which has a huge medical, societal and economic cost. Thousands of health care providers have dedicated their lives to the recovery process and to educating the public about alcoholism, drug dependence, and treatment issues. DeJongh calls upon all residents, departments and agencies, businesses and civic organizations, to promote the benefits of drug and alcohol addiction treatment and recovery programs. |
