GOVERNOR DEJONGH LEADS V-I DELEGATION TO DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION IN DENVER, COLORADO

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. departed the territory Tuesday afternoon to lead the Virgin Islands Democratic Party delegation to the party’s national convention. The week-long event in Denver, Colorado is expected to see Senator Barack Obama accept the party’s nomination in the November U.S. Presidential election.

DeJongh, who by virtue of his position serves as titular head of the V.I. Democratic Party, has twice hosted Senator Obama in the Virgin Islands. “My wife, Cecile, and I have actively campaigned for Senator Obama. We are at an exciting time in the nation’s history and I look forward to capturing the moment over the next few days in Denver as both Senators Biden and Obama formally accept the party’s nominations.”

Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis is also in attendance at the Democratic National Convention. In the absence of both deJongh and Francis, and based on provisions of the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, Finance Commissioner Claudette Watson-Anderson will serve as Acting Governor. DeJongh returns to the territory over the weekend.
