GOVERNOR DEJONGH VISITS TERRITORIAL SCHOOLS, WELCOMES BACK STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND ADMINISTRATORS

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. toured public school campuses in both districts on Monday, the first day of the 2008-2009 school year. DeJongh began his campus visits on St. Croix Monday morning at Claude O. Markoe Elementary School and continued on to Central High School, St. Croix Educational Complex, and John H. Woodson Junior High School. On St. Thomas, the Governor visited Ulla F. Muller Elementary School and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School.

“At this start of the new school year, I would like to welcome back and thank all students, parents, guardians, teachers and staff for all that they will collectively achieve this new school year. This is a time not only of hope for the future and excitement for the days ahead and all that the new year will bring, but it is also a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. As we take this next step, we pledge to work together to achieve our intended goals for all students in the Territory,” deJongh said.

In both school districts the Governor and Executive Staff met with students, principals, administrators, teachers, and other staff while touring the school campuses. The Governor delivered a welcome back message and encouraged students to study hard and dedicate themselves to all that they wished to achieve this academic year.

At John H. Woodson Junior High School on St. Croix, the Governor met with teachers and heard their concerns, addressing specific issues regarding the school facility and maintenance needs. The Governor extended his visit at the school in order to fully address and resolve the teachers’ concerns before continuing on to visit the schools in the St. Thomas school district.

Overall, DeJongh said he was proud to welcome students and teachers back to school on the opening day of a new school year and was pleased to be able to once again assess the school facilities and thank teachers for their dedication in service to our young people. “As we focus on returning our children back to school, we continue the effort to provide safe, clean schools with all the resources available and needed to enable every child in the Virgin Islands to receive the education that they deserve. As we do so, we are building the future for our next generation of workers and leaders—a goal that we can all be proud of.”
