GOVERNOR OFFERS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF COMMUNITY ACTIVIST WALTER LEWIS Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. said Wednesday he was saddened to learn of the death of respected community activist Walter Lewis. "The Virgin Islands community joins the Lewis, Garfield and Krigger families in mourning the loss of this giant of a man who could best be described as a multi-faceted public servant," deJongh said. Mr. Lewis has served our community in a number of capacities, from his more than 37 years with the Postal Service to his service as an accountant and teacher. As a postal employee, Mr. Lewis rose through the ranks aspiring to positions that included: Associate Employee Development Advisor for the Virgin Islands, Civil Service Examiner and Supervisor of Mails and Delivery. "We remember fondly his service to the Memorial Moravian Church in positions including: Delegate to the Virgin Islands Conference; president of the Men’s Fellowship; chairman of the fundraising committee; treasurer of both the Moravian School and of the King’s Daughters and Sons Circle. DeJongh said the community will forever be grateful to the contributions of this fine Virgin Islander who did much to improve the social fabric of our community and living conditions of so many. "As we extend condolences to the family of the late Walter Lewis, we pray that his family’s grief is somewhat lessened knowing that Walter lived a good life and that his contributions to our community will live on for years to come," deJongh said. |
