GOVERNOR AND FIRST LADY TO HONOR GRANDPARENTS IN THE TERRITORY, COMMUNITY REQUESTED TO REGISTER ELDEST GRANDPARENT AT DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES

Governor John P. deJongh Jr. and First Lady Cecile deJongh will honor grandparents and families during ceremonies to be held on St. Thomas and St. Croix in recognition of Grandparents Day, as proclaimed by Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. According to the proclamation, the first Sunday of September is traditionally observed each year for this importance commemoration.

“Throughout our lives, our grandparents have provided comfort, motivation, and guidance to our families, and to the community at large. We are blessed to have their presence in our daily lives, and we rightly celebrate the special place they hold in our hearts. As we observe all that they provide for us as family members, stewards of the community, and as mentors, teachers, and friends, we proudly honor their impact on our society and celebrate their important links to history and tradition in total,” Cecile deJongh said.

In preparation for the ceremonies to be held on St. Thomas and St. Croix, the First Lady’s Grandparents Day Planning and Steering Committee is calling upon families in the community to register their eldest grandparent at the Department of Human Services. On St. Thomas, please contact Cheryl S. Plaskett at 774-5265 and on St. Croix, please contact Carolyn White at 773-6630 or Angela Christian at 772-0683. The eldest grandparents in both island districts will be honored and presented with a plaque during the upcoming ceremonies, on St. Thomas on Sunday, September 7th and on St. Croix, the event is scheduled for Sunday, September 14th. The deadline to register with the Department of Human Services is Monday, August 25, 2008.
